Phase 4 - Mini Burn Foot Navigation

In the upcoming 2024 Mini Burn Family Adventure Race, the foot navigation phase promises an exciting challenge. While the maps shown below are for reference only and not the actual map for this year, they give you a good idea of what to expect.

At the end of the Mountain Biking phase, you'll receive a map featuring five checkpoints. Your task is to find these checkpoints on foot.

Types of Maps

We use various map types for this phase, including:

  • Orienteering Map (Sample Map 1)

  • Google Earth Map (Sample Map 2)

  • OS Map (Sample Map 3)

Each map type requires slightly different navigation skills, but rest assured, you won’t get lost, and finding all the checkpoints is definitely achievable.

Tips for Success

  • Map Orientation: All maps are oriented with North at the top.

  • Start and Finish: These are marked with a triangle on the map.

  • Lake: Depicted as a blue blob on most maps (grey on Google Earth).

  • Distance: The foot navigation phase will cover roughly 2 km, though this may vary with detours.

  • Visibility: Some checkpoints may be visible from the event centre.

  • Mandatory Checkpoint: Only one checkpoint is compulsory; the rest are optional. We’ll cover results and scoring details in the next post.

  • Navigation Tip: Avoid following other teams as they may be off track.

We’re excited to see how you navigate this year’s course and what new challenges await. Stay tuned for the final details on which map type you’ll be using and get ready for an adventure!
