A Mini Burn Invitation

On Saturday 29th August, I'm inviting 20 families to spend the day with me at Llantrithyd Park in the Vale of Glamorgan.

After 15 years of running Mini Burn, I have lots of ideas about where it could go next.

Rather than making those decisions on my own, I'd like your help.

On Saturday 29th August, I'm inviting 20 families to spend the day with me at Llantrithyd Park in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The purpose of the day isn't simply to take part in a Mini Burn—it's to help shape its future.

We'll start the morning with a short introduction to Mini Burn, how it came about and some of the ideas I'm currently exploring.

We'll then learn some of the skills that make Mini Burn unique, including map reading and kayaking, before heading out for a guided orientation walk around the Deer Park.

Then it's time to race.

Families will compete together in a shortened Mini Burn involving running, cycling, kayaking and navigation. It's designed to be fun, challenging and give everyone a genuine feel for what Mini Burn is all about.

After lunch, we'll sit down together for the most important part of the day.

I'II be asking for your thoughts. No presentations. No right or wrong answers. Just honest conversation with people who care about creating brilliant opportunities for their children. We also want ideas from your little ones!

Who am I looking for?

I'm inviting:

  • 10 families who have previously taken part in Mini Burn.

  • 10 families who are completely new to Mini Burn.

Families must have at least one child aged between 7 and 11 years old and can be up to 4 members.

I'd particularly love to hear from families who are involved in clubs, community groups, businesses or organisations that value family development, health and wellbeing. More importantly, I'm looking for people who enjoy sharing ideas, asking questions and helping create something unique

What's included?

Your place is completely free.

We'll provide:

  • Kayaks and all safety equipment.

  • Instruction throughout the day.

  • A guided tour of Llantrithyd Deer Park.

  • Your Mini Burn race, with a medal of course.

  • Ice Cream!

The only thing you'll need to bring is your own bike, helmet and suitable outdoor clothing.

If you're travelling from further afield, you're welcome to camp free of charge at Llantrithyd Park on the Friday or Saturday night and make a weekend of it.

How to apply

I'd love to know a little about the families joining us so please e-mail me the answers to these three questions:

1. Have you taken part in Mini Burn before?

2. Why would your family like to be part of this day?

3. What do you think you could bring to the discussion that would help shape the future of Mini Burn?

Please send your responses by 17th July.

If you are selected you will receive an e-mail with full information before the end of July.

I genuinely believe Mini Burn will be stronger if it's shaped by the people who take part in it.
