The lake at Margam Park is a charming, open space nestled within the expansive lawns in front of Margam Abbey. Featuring a quaint island in its center, this small lake offers an ideal setting for our event. It's shallow and safe, and with our dedicated water safety team on standby, you’re sure to have a blast as you navigate your two loops around the lake.
Our event centre is conveniently located on the lake’s bank, allowing spectators to cheer you on as you paddle (hopefully forward!) and splash through the water.
If you're new to kayaking, here's what you can expect:
You're Not Alone: Many Mini Burn competitors are first-time kayakers too, so you’re in good company!
Safety First: Before you get on the water, you’ll be fitted with a buoyancy aid. We have a range of sizes, including those with leg straps for younger children (around 9 years and under). All buoyancy aids are adjustable, and we’re here to help you get the right fit.
Post-Run Briefing: After finishing your run, you’ll stop at the lake where a marshal will guide you through the next steps.
Paddle Power: You’ll receive a paddle. For younger children, you can choose whether they want their own paddle or just enjoy the ride.
Boat Basics: We’ll introduce you to your boat and assist you with getting in if needed. We have both double and single kayaks, and we’ll help determine the best option based on your team’s composition and ages.
The Course: You’ll paddle two loops around the lake, navigating four buoys before returning to the exit point. If you’re having trouble paddling forward, we’ll offer tips and support.
Wet Bottoms: By this point, you might notice that your bottom is a bit wet!
Wrap-Up: Once you’re done, return your buoyancy aid and paddle, then head back to the event center to prepare for the next phase.
For your peace of mind, since we started running these events in 2010, with nearly 40 of them under our belt, not a single competitor has fallen out of their kayak, and everyone has completed the course!
