Burn 6 Hour Race Area

Unlike many Adventure Races that require significant road travel to get from point A to point B, the Burn Series takes advantage of one of the UK’s premier locations for Adventure Racing—the stunning South Wales Valleys!

While Gavin and Stacey are busy filming their upcoming Christmas Special on Barry Island, South Wales is in the spotlight for all its usual preconceptions - We, however, want to showcase its amazing potential for adventure! We’ve been exploring the terrain to create a truly memorable event, and here’s what you can expect.

Get ready for 6 hours of running, biking, and a short kayak, along with some exciting challenges! The map below is the Burn 6 hour race area, but the checkpoint locations are under wraps!

Please arrive by 08:00 for an 08:30 start. You’ll receive your race number, timing chip, and map, and we’ll direct you to where you can leave your bike and transition bag. We’ll have a marquee available for your belongings in case of inclement weather.

You’ll have approximately 30 minutes to review your map and strategise your foot and bike routes, including a race briefing 15 minutes before the start. There will be around 15 foot checkpoints and 18 bike checkpoints, which we are currently finalizing.

The race will kick off with a mass start on foot at 08:30. You’ll have 6 hours to collect as many checkpoints as possible and complete the short kayak. You are to collect the run check points first with the kayak phase to be completed at any point during or after the run. The kayak lake is conveniently close to the start line, so you might consider doing it right away.

The kayaking will be brief, taking no more than 15 minutes and you can transition from foot to bike only once during the race.

After collecting as many run checkpoints as you can (we suggest allocating at least 4 hours for the bike phase), return to the event centre to pick up your bike. Be sure to bring a bag with food, water, a warm layer, waterproofs, and basic bike spares.

Although the map may seem manageable, the relentless hills leave little room for flat terrain! If you make it to Afan Mountain Biking Centre, you’ll get to experience some beautiful trails that are usually quite quiet and in excellent condition.

As you’re out on the mountain, we’ll have 200 adventurous families participating in the Mini Burn Family Adventure Race at Margam Park. As you return to the event centre, you’ll be role models for these young adventurers, so let’s share our passion for Adventure Racing and inspire more people to get involved!
