Competitors Information Contents
1. Venue & Timings
Location: Margam Park, Port Talbot, SA13 2TJ.Directions: Exit the M4 at Junction 38 and follow signs to the Margam Park main entrance. Mention that you are taking part in Mini Burn at the turnstiles to be let in for free. We will cover your £4.50 parking fee.
Schedule:
Registration: 10:00 - 13:00 (Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your start time to avoid queues).
Start Times: First start at 10:30, final start at 12:30. Your specific start time and race briefing time will be available on our website's blog section the week before the event.
Trophy Presentation: Approximately 15:00 for 1st place in each category (2nd & 3rd for family categories).
2. Registration
Location: Event Centre Marquee.
Find your race number displayed outside the marquee.
Provide your number to the registration staff inside and collect your race pack, which includes:
Race numbers (attach one to your top and one to your bike seat post).
Sport Ident timing chip (one per team/pair).
Orienteering map (for the final phase).
After registration, take your bikes to the transition area and follow the marshal's instructions.
There will be race briefings throughout the morning to coincide with your start time. These briefings will include essential updates, so please attend at the specified times.
3. Route
The course is fully signposted, but occasionally signs may be moved. Study the maps provided carefully.
Phase 1: 3km Run
A flat 3km loop around the lower park, with hard-packed trails and some tarmac. It is fully signposted with ORANGE MARKERS.
There are three deer gates en route, which may swing closed behind you. Ensure they are closed after passing.
Phase 2: 1km Kayak
Follow marshal instructions at the lake.
You’ll be given a buoyancy aid, paddle, and allocated a kayak. Complete two loops of the small lake, going around all marker buoys.
Return your buoyancy aids and paddles to the marshal after completing the course.
Phase 3: 10km Mountain Biking
Collect your bike and helmet after the kayak phase.
Course Split: After 4km, bear right for the long course (more challenging) or stay on the main track for the short course.
The long course includes a climb to the top of the park with stunning views. Pace yourself and enjoy the ride. If conditions are wet, expect muddy terrain.
Rejoin the short course towards the end and finish the remaining sections together.
The route is marked with YELLOW MARKERS. Remember to punch your timing chip at the checkpoint on the long course. There is no checkpoint on the short course.
Phase 4: Foot Orienteering
5 checkpoints to find over 2km. Only one checkpoint is compulsory; the others can be visited in any order.
10 points are awarded per checkpoint found.
There may be additional adventure activities at some checkpoints.
4. Checkpoints
Timing Chips: Handle your chip carefully. Lost or damaged chips mean no race time and incur charges. Chips are simple to use, and you will be shown how to do so at registration and during the briefing.
Checkpoints: The only checkpoints you will find on the course are as follows:
Phase 3: Long course checkpoint (30 pts).
Phase 4: Five checkpoints, minimum of one compulsory (10 pts each).
Return your timing chip at the download marquee after finishing the race to receive your overall time and checkpoint results. You'll also receive your Mini Burn medal.
5. Rules
Teams/Pairs: Must stay together and follow the prescribed route.
Helmet: Mandatory during the bike phase.
Equipment Restrictions: No GPS devices or electric bikes unless declared as non-competitive.
6. Recommended Kit List
Per Pair/Team:
Well-maintained mountain bike
Cycle helmet
Waterproof jacket (if rain is forecast)
T-shirt, running shorts, leggings or cycling shorts
Water-bottle or hydration system
Energy bars/gels or similar food
Cycling gloves
Additional Recommended Items:
Fully charged mobile phone
Basic first aid supplies (plasters, wound dressing)
Bike pump, spare tube & tyre levers
Chain tool
Cycling shoes or trainers
7. Catering, T-Shirts, Facilities & Camping
Catering: Charlotte’s Pantry in the courtyard at Margam Park offers hot and cold food and drinks from 10:00 to 16:00.
T-Shirts: Available for £12 at the event centre (cash or bank transfer accepted).

8. Photography
Official photographers will be present. Photos will be uploaded to our Burn Series Facebook page. To purchase, contact the photographer as indicated on each photo.
9. Medic & Emergency Contacts
First aid trained marshals and a dedicated First Responder will be available.
For serious incidents, call 999 first, then notify the Race Director at 07862 227 187.
10. Insurance
Multisport Ltd has third-party insurance. Participants are advised to consider personal injury insurance.
