Description: Our longest-standing Mini Burn is now in its 11th year. Thousands of families have experienced this race, which is probably our most challenging Mini Burn with plenty of hills and more technical terrain. No adventure racing experience is required only a thirst for adventure. For teams of families and friends. Kayaks provided. Just bring a bike. Medals for all finishers and trophies for winners!
Race timings: Staggered starts from 10.00 am until midday. Your start time will be posted on this page a week prior to the event along with more detailed race information. The trophy giving will be at approximately 15:00.
- Family Team (2-4 participants with at least one junior under 10yrs old and one adult)
- Family Team (2-4 participants with at least one junior 10yrs old or over and one adult)
- Team (2-4 participants over 18 yrs)
Cost: £25 per junior and £45 per adult.
Distance & phases: 3km run, 12km mountain bike, 1km kayak & 2km foot navigation phase. (All distances are approximate)
Timing: You will be given a Sport Ident timing chip to wear around your wrist. (One per team) You will be required to present the timing chip at checkpoints around the course. This will give you a time for each of the phases.
Foot phase: A flat run around the lower part of Margam Park along well-marked trails. There will be a checkpoint at the end of the run.
Cycling phase: The cycling is on a combination of terrain such as grass, track, road, single trail & stoney tracks. There will be a short course option of approximately 5km which also avoids the big hill climb. There will also be an alternative route later on in the course on both the long and short courses that avoid some of the more technical single trails. The whole course is well signposted. HELMETS MUST BE WORN. There will be one checkpoint at the top of the hill on the long course and a second one at the end of the bike phase. If you do not own a bike you will need to borrow one from a friend.
Kayaking phase: The kayaking will be around 4 buoys in the lake. There will be plenty of water safety and we will be offering support and instruction if required. All kayaks and kayaking equipment are provided. You will get a wet bottom in the kayaks so you may wish to bring some waterproof trousers or a change of trousers for after the kayak. There will be a checkpoint at the end of the kayak.
Orienteering phase: Once you’ve completed the mountain bike phase you will be given a map featuring five checkpoints. All you need to do is find them! There will be time penalties for any checkpoints not found. There will be a finish checkpoint at the end of the course.
Parking: Please park in the main car park at Margam Park and bring all of your event clothing and equipment to the event centre. When you pass through the turnstiles you will be asked to show proof of entry so that you get free entry into the park. Head up the hill and you will see the event centre in the open area to your right.
Catering: Hot & cold snacks and drinks will be available to purchase from Cafe Remos which is in the courtyard about 200m from the event centre.
Accommodation: There are a number of campsites and B&B options in the area which as easily accessible from Margam Park.
