Adventures in the Alps

This week we teamed up with Adventures in the Alps to run an Adventure Racing Training camp based on the edge of Lake Annecy in France. It was the perfect way for participants to combine a holiday with training and to learn some valuable tips for getting started in this exciting new sport.

It is great training for the Burn Series so if you are interested in finding out more then do get in touch. There has even been talk of an Alps Burn 2012 so watch this space! If you ‘Like’ their facebook page you automatically get 10% off all camps.

Mini Burn Date Set

The 8th October 2011 at Margam Park will see the first Mini Burn take off.

Don’t miss out on the action and come for the day. Bring the family, bring a picnic and we’ll do what we can to organise the weather too!

Take a look at the event page and if you’re keen then enter online. We are here to answer any questions you may have.

Mud is great!

Since many of you enjoyed the mud so much on the weekend, I thought I’d share this picture with you. This was my bike after a Cardiff Burn recce today! It’s going to be another muddy event.

Cardiff Burn is on the 23rd October. Get it in your diary now!

Post Event News

Congratulations to everyone who turned up today to take part in Swansea Burn. We are working hard to get the results up here in the next few hours so keep an eye on our website.

Thank you a million times over to all marshals and everyone who was part of making the day such a great success. I am indebted to you all.

Post event report and results will be available shortly.

It’s looking good

I’ve taken this off BBC weather….couldn’t be any sunnier for Swansea Burn. I never thought I’d say this but don’t forget your sun cream!

Mountain Bike Navigation

Today we’ve been up on Kilvey Hill running around making final decisions on where the check points are going. The area is fantastic for biking and once you reach the summit you will have the best views in Swansea. Do stop for a moment to enjoy it!

At present it’s not too wet and the going is good. It is a combination of 4×4 tracks & smaller paths. The maps that you will be given will have paths clearly marked. We will indicate proposed routes, one that is easy and one that is technical to help you on your way, but at the end of the day it’s your choice where you want to go.

You might want to bring a compass but it’s not necessary. If at any stage you get lost then look up and you will see the masts on the summit.

Even though you might be racing to get to the finish line, do take your time to enjoy the riding.

Swansea Maritime Volunteer Service

I’m really pleased to be able to announce that Paul Kent and the Swansea Maritine Volunteer Service have agreed to be part of Swansea Burn this year to help out on the Kayak phase along with Neal & Joe from Cardiff Canoe Club.

Our number one priority on the day is to ensure we put on a safe and enjoyable event for everyone and we can only do so with help from these kind people who give up their day to help out. Thank you so much!

Into the final month

Come rain or shine, which is rather unpredictable these days, Swansea Burn promises to the an event to remember. We’ve had lots of kind people offering to help out on the day which is hugely appreciate.

We thought we’d put up some training tips for those that have entered to help you get to the start line. It’s a common saying in multisport adventure racing that the hardest part is getting to the start line so here are a few things that may help.

(1) The best way to train for Swansea Burn is to do short intervals of training. Even though Swansea Burn is an endurance event, it doesn’t mean you need to train for longer periods of time. Try and do a few fast 5k runs and a few fast 15k bikes between now and the event. If you can bike off road then all the better. High intensity sessions will get you fit quicker than long low intensity sessions.

(2) Spend a little bit of time on upper body work outs. See how many or each you can do in a 2 min period. Sit ups – use your arms above your head  and swing them forward to provide momentum. Press ups -yep, most of us can’t do them so cheat and put your knees on the floor. Deadlifts – Keep your back straight by squeezing your butt. It’s best to work hard for a shorter period of time.

(3) Sleep well but not too much, about 7-8hrs a day

(4) This next point I class as the most important of all. Make sure you fuel your body appropriately for what you are asking it to do.Vehicles can not run without the right type of fuel and nor can our bodies. Have you ever put petrol in a diesel tank? It won’t go for long. Ideally you want to keep your glucose level stable and this is achieved by eating low GI foods. There are loads of websites out there so just google it. If you are already very active and partake in high intensity workouts then check out the Paleo Diet. We here at Multisport Wales swear by it.

We’ll keep posting here so log on whenever you can.
